Why Sleep Apnea is a Force Multiplier for VA Claims

As a retired CPA and Certified Fraud Examiner who has experience supporting veterans' claims, I’ve seen sleep apnea become one of the most powerful ways to increase a veteran’s combined rating.

High-Value Secondary Conditions Linked to Sleep Apnea

Condition Typical Rating Why It’s Linked
Hypertension10–20%Repeated oxygen drops spike blood pressure
GERD / Acid Reflux10–30%Increased abdominal pressure from apnea episodes
Migraines / Headaches0–50%Chronic sleep disruption and oxygen deprivation
Erectile Dysfunction (ED)0–20% or SMC-KVascular damage + severe fatigue
Depression / Anxiety Aggravation10–70%Chronic fatigue worsens mental health symptoms
Asthma / Respiratory Aggravation10–100%Especially strong under PACT Act presumptives

Documenting CPAP Intolerance

Some veterans genuinely cannot tolerate CPAP because of PTSD-related nightmares or claustrophobia. If that applies, discuss it honestly with your treating clinician so the medical record reflects the actual course of care. Sleep apnea carries real health risks when untreated, and treatment decisions should be made with a doctor, not for claim reasons. The record should describe what actually happens, which makes the medical nexus to hypertension, GERD, migraines, ED, and more much clearer to the VA.
